A sample of professors from various Swiss academic institutions, representing three main fields (natural sciences, humanities and social sciences, law), were asked about their perception of the value of the doctorate. The working hypothesis was that there are differences in perceived value between doctorates carried out at institutions in French-speaking Switzerland and those carried out at institutions in German-speaking Switzerland.
“Our general finding is that there are differences in the scope and value of the PhD, but that this is only true of the humanities and social sciences and law. Moreover, and this finding depends on the degree of internationalization of the branch, differences often exist more between institutions, respectively disciplines, rather than between language regions. »
